In the body of vegans, the omega-6/omega-3 ratio is mostly out of place. It starts with the fact that vegan foods contain too many omega-6 fatty acids - they are contained both in plant food itself and in vegetable oils. Although flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, edamame beans and several vegetable oils contain the omega-3 fatty acid ALA, the human body cannot convert this fatty acid well into the much-needed EPA and DHA fatty acids. 0.2 to 8% of consumed ALA is converted to the EPA form and only 0.05% of ALA is converted to the DHA form. Therefore, it is recommended to take at least 500 mg of EPA and DHA daily.
