WHAT IS COENZYME Q10 AND AT WHAT AGE DO WE NEED IT SUPPLEMENT?

The active form of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), ubiquinol, is a fat-soluble antioxidant found in all cells of our body. It has an indispensable role in the cell's energy production process, and the effect of CoQ10 in the cell could be compared, for example, to the role played by a spark plug in an internal combustion engine.  Since CoQ10 plays such an important role in the production of energy within cells, it is probably not surprising that it is found in the highest concentration in our body where the need for energy is greatest: the heart, brain, liver and kidneys. Ubiquinol helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

Research shows that the level of ubiquinol in the body begins to decrease from the age of thirty. The reduced form of Q10, or ubiquinol, is the most suitable choice for the elderly and in chronic diseases, when the absorption of ubiquinone (unreduced form) or the transformation into ubiquinol is difficult.

Since statins inhibit the natural production of Q10 in the body, additional Q10 administration is recommended during statin treatment.  Statins often cause muscle pain, cramps and fatigue as side effects, which are due to depletion of CoQ10 reserves in the body. Daily consumption of ubiquinol helps meet the body's need for CoQ10.
