Why do children need omega-3 fatty acids or fish oil?
Obviously, some parents may wonder if their children really need to take extra omega-3. Don't they get all the necessary substances from milk, fruit, vegetables and meat/fish?
Unfortunately, our body cannot produce omega-3 fatty acids on its own, and we have to get them by eating large amounts of omega-3-rich foods or by consuming additional fish oil. Everyone, both adults and children.
Since many children do not want to eat fatty fish that contain omega-3, fish oil products for children are becoming more and more popular.
Omega-3 fatty acids have many good properties, but their effect on children is particularly great. If the mother consumes enough DHA, it contributes to the development of normal brain and vision in the fetus and in the breastfed child, and in the normal development of the child up to 1 year of age.
A 2012 Oxford University study found that daily intake of DHA improved both reading skills and behavior in elementary school students.
"Our results showed that daily omega-3 supplementation improved reading among students with the weakest reading skills (the bottom fifth of students) and allowed these children to catch up with others," said Dr. Alex Richardson, Senior Research Fellow, University of Oxford.
Previous studies have shown positive effects of omega-3 supplements in children suffering from dyslexia or ADHD.
